Why DeSantis covers up Covid data?
“Even by Florida standards, Gov. Ron DeSantis is a Covid catastrophe,” said Lizette Alvarez. The Republican governor has embraced a reckless, stay-open-at-all-costs strategy that has “needlessly damaged the lives of so many Floridians.” He’s scoffed at masks, sided with herd-immunity advocates, allowed bars and restaurants to remain open, and barred local governments from fining mask scofflaws or implementing new restrictions in response to the state’s soaring infection rates. To hide the consequences of his policies, DeSantis has aggressively sought to suppress information about hospitalizations, new cases, and deaths, even ordering the state health department not to mention Covid-19 in the weeks before the presidential election. The result “has been a disaster.” Florida has suffered 1.2 million Covid cases (third in the nation behind California and Texas), 61,000 hospitalizations, and 20,000 deaths, and the current test-positivity rate is an alarming 10 percent. DeSantis insists his policies saved jobs, because many businesses remain open. But his scorn for mask wearing, social distancing, and other precautions is “reprehensible.” No wonder many Floridians are now wearing “My Governor Is An Idiot” face masks and referring to him as “DeathSantis.”
