Stonehenge, Wiltshire: Tunnel greenlit

The Government has given the final go-ahead to the construction of a £1.7bn road tunnel adjacent to Stonehenge. The two-milelong tunnel is intended to ease congestion on the A303, which runs within a few hundred metres of the monument, and hide its traffic. Environmentalists and archaeologists have warned that it could cause irreversible damage to the site, and planning officials had advised against the scheme, but Transport Secretary Grant Shapps overruled them. Preparatory work is due to begin next spring, with construction expected to be completed in 2028.
