Leicester: Virtual Diwali

British Hindus, Jains and Sikhs celebrated Diwali virtually last weekend, as Covid restrictions forced the cancellation of almost all events to mark the Indian festival of lights. In Leicester, which normally hosts one of the largest celebrations outside India, the council had organised an online programme, including footage of last year’s fireworks and of the lighting of diya oil lamps, to encourage people to stay at home. In London, the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak – a practising Hindu – lit lamps outside 11 Downing Street. “For us, Diwali is special,” he said, “and it’s going to be difficult this year.”
