Richard Leonard, the leader of Scottish Labour since 2017, resigned last week, saying speculation about his position had become a “distraction”. A key ally of Jeremy Corbyn, the Yorkshire-born ex union official moved the party to the left. It shed six of its seven Scottish MPs under his leadership, and is now polling at 18%, 35 points behind the SNP. A fast-tracked contest will be held to ensure a successor is in post well ahead of the Holyrood election on 6 May. Anas Sarwar (above), a centrist MSP who is the party’s constitution spokesman, is the current favourite.
